M. Victor Leventritt Lecture: Laurie Simmons, in conversation with Robin Kelsey, Shirley Carter Burden Professor of Photography, Harvard University
Laurie Simmons has been staging scenes for the camera that feature dolls, dollhouses, and other toy objects since the 1970s. Simmons’s interest in creating and photographing small self-contained worlds that often touch on themes of nostalgia and memory echoes Feininger’s practice of recording miniature wooden villages, model yachts, and mannequins in shop windows.
ArtisTalk is a new six-part series of lectures by and conversations with some of today’s most thought-provoking artists. Contemporary artists have much to say and much to teach about the complex world in which we live. The series provides an opportunity to listen to and interact with artists who are influential purveyors of powerful aesthetic, cultural, and social ideas. Each of the talks is followed by a moderated conversation with the artist, a reception, and an after-hours viewing of the Sackler Museum galleries.
The spring series will feature three contemporary photographers whose work recalls different aspects of Lyonel Feininger’s photography, which will be the subject of a special exhibition in the Sackler Museum March 30–June 2, 2012
The M. Victor Leventritt Fund was established through the generosity of the wife, children, and friends of the late M. Victor Leventritt, Harvard Class of 1935. The purpose of the fund is to present outstanding scholars of the history and theory of art to the Harvard and Greater Boston communities.
The ArtisTalk series was made possible in part by generous support from the Emily Rauh Pulitzer and Joseph Pulitzer Jr. Fund for Modern and Contemporary Art, Harvard Art Museums.
